The purpose of this blog is to share ideas and examples of how art can engage communities to create a safer and more healing environment.
We have witnessed so many tragedies.
As an artist, I want to know how I can help, but do something more…pre-emptive than to wave a flag or create a memorial. Can public art prevent crime? Can it be an effective alternative to surveillance cameras? Can it calm violent impulses? Can it be a vehicle for understanding in conditions of opposition and mistrust? I have many more questions, and not many answers.
I hope that we can come up with some together.
